Hi, I'm Bigg Time Charlie. I have a passion for hunting, fishing, trapping and almost anything to do with the outdoors. I just turned 16 and am in 10th grade at Becker High School in Becker, MN. I try to be outside as much as I can. I enjoy building things that can help me with my outdoor adventures. I also love to spend time at our cabin in Cass Lake, MN. Up there I spend my time fishing, hunting, trapping and just being in the woods. My favorite lake to go fishing on is Lake of the Woods because there is a potential for some really BIGG fish. I also like to bow fish for carp and sucker. If it has to do with the outdoors I love it.
Fishing is my favorite way to experience the outdoors. Mostly because there are so many species to catch and you can fish year round. My biggest fish so far is a 37 inch pike. I have tried almost every kind of fishing from bow fishing to fly fishing. I will try to cook and taste everything at least once too! I just got into fly fishing a few years ago when I bought a fly rod at a flea market. I started off not very good at casting a fly rod, but with practice and You Tube I finally got the hang of it. A friend gave me a tying kit, so I practice tying flies and baits too. My favorite fish, to fish for, would probably have to be Bass or Pike. I like to fish for bass because they will blow up a topwater lure and you can fish for them in almost every lake. Pike are fun because they almost always put up a good fight and they can grow really big. Eating, you can't beat the state fish, Walleye. In 2017 I joined the Becker Bass Team where we fish tournaments and local events. My partner Carter and I finished 5th place in the Pelican Lake tournament in August. Our best B.A.S.S. tournament finish so far.
Hunting is another fun way to experience the outdoors and get meat in the freezer. I like to hunt and spend time in the woods learning it all. My favorite bird to hunt would be the ruffed grouse. They are hard to shoot when they are flying. Sometimes they are not very smart so you can walk slow and find them sitting. I also like to deer hunt, the biggest buck I've ever shot is only a little spike. When I seen it I told my dad I shot a two pointer! Despite not shooting a big buck yet I still love being up in the stand and watching the deer and other wildlife that wonders by.
In 2016 I earned my Jr. Trapping certification, so I haven't been trapping for very long, When we are up north I have a mentor, John, who has been trapping for years and he teaches me lots of stuff. This year has been fun. I have had luck trapping coons, beavers, skunks, muskrats and opossums. The fox and coyotes have still outsmarted me but hopefully I'll outsmart them sooner or later. Trapping is a good way to experience the outdoors in a different way than hunting and fishing. It really gets you to learn and observe nature. You really learn about the animals and what they eat, how they live and many other things that can make you a better trapper. You also get to be outdoors a lot when your trapping because you need to check you traps often. You can see what changes day to day and how the animals move throughout the trapping season.
